Job Summary

The Forensic Supervisor/Expert is responsible for overseeing forensic operations within a laboratory or field unit, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintaining the accuracy and integrity of forensic analyses. This position may involve direct supervision of forensic specialists and technicians, coordinating casework, managing workloads, and providing expert guidance on forensic procedures.

Primary Responsibilities

May direct, mentor, and/or evaluate forensic specialists, technicians, and support staff, including assigning or overseeing forensic casework, providing guidance and training.

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency's operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts.

Conduct scientific examinations and analyses on forensic evidence, including but not limited to DNA, toxicology, ballistics, controlled substances, trace evidence, and digital forensics.

Maintain strict adherence to forensic protocols, laboratory standards, and chain-of-custody procedures.

Operate and maintain specialized forensic instruments and laboratory equipment.

Document, interpret, and validate forensic test results with a high degree of accuracy.

Prepare and maintain detailed forensic reports and technical documentation.

Ensure timely completion of forensic casework while prioritizing urgent cases as needed.

Assist law enforcement agencies in interpreting forensic findings and understanding forensic methodologies.

Provide expert testimony in court proceedings to explain forensic findings clearly and objectively.

Work closely with prosecutors, defense attorneys, and investigators to present forensic evidence effectively.

Adhere to all legal and ethical standards for forensic science and courtroom testimony.

Participate in proficiency testing, forensic audits, and laboratory accreditation programs.

Follow all state and federal forensic regulations, safety protocols, and ethical guidelines.

Work collaboratively with law enforcement, attorneys, medical examiners, and other forensic professionals.

Knowledge and Skills

Strong knowledge of forensic science principles, laboratory techniques, and analytical procedures.

Ability to direct, mentor, and evaluate forensic specialists, technicians, and support staff.

Effective supervisory and mentorship skills to guide forensic personnel.

Proficiency in scientific instrumentation, forensic databases, and digital analysis tools.

Ability to examine, interpret, and validate complex forensic evidence.

Exceptional precision in handling and analyzing evidence.

Ability to document forensic processes thoroughly and ensure proper chain-of-custody management.

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills for forensic reporting and expert testimony.

Ability to explain technical forensic concepts in an understandable manner to legal professionals and juries.

Strong adherence to legal and ethical forensic science standards.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Minimum Qualifications

At least three years of experience in forensic science, crime scene investigation, laboratory analysis, or a related field, including one year in a leadership capacity.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
