Travel Consultants staff our Welcome Center and greet and assist visitors, mapping out routes, and providing travel and tourism information about Arkansas.  Other duties include participating in familiarization tours, compiling visitation data, and entering it into the computer, stocking and keeping inventory of literature in literature racks and helping to maintain the cleanliness of the center.  Job requires occasional moderate lifting, up to 45 pounds.  Must be available to work some weekends and holidays.  Travel Consultants wear a uniform provided by the department.

Applicants must meet or exceed the following qualifications:  the formal education of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience in public relations, customer service, or related area. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the qualifications review committee.

Summary

The Travel Consultant is responsible for providing customer service, disseminating travel and tourism information, and collecting statistical information. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Greets the traveling public and provides information regarding travel routes, weather, tourism attractions and services. Makes recommendations to tourists that enhance and/or extend the traveler's stay in Arkansas and encourage increased revenue to the state. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of state travel and tourism information, including highway routes, sites of historic interest, parks and recreation, and special events. Assists with inventory of literature or supplies by receiving, counting, stocking and also assists with displays. Conducts surveys and records statistics regarding travel/visitation and performs data entry of statistics. May staff information booths at fairs or conferences. May be assigned to attend local tourism events. May make presentations to schools or civic groups. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of public relations processes. Knowledge of research and data collection techniques related to travel information dissemination. Knowledge of computer data entry and recordkeeping Ability to organize and interpret state tourism data. Ability to greet, determine needs, and communicate information to visitors and members of the general public, using appropriate customer service techniques. Ability to prepare and provide written and oral information and maintain records and files related to travel/tourism. Ability to work in a technologically enhanced environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, colleagues, and ADPT staff.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience in public relations, customer service, or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
