The mission of the Department of Corrections is to be a public safety resource for Arkansas families by providing professional management solutions and evidence-based rehabilitative initiatives for offenders.
All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Department Personnel are prohibited from the use or possession of a medicinal marijuana card pursuant to this policy and state law.

Summary
The Arkansas Department of Correction/Department of Community Correction (ADC/DCC) Major is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of the correctional facility unit or for overall facility security. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Supervises a protective service worker staff by interviewing, recommending hire/fire, assigning and reviewing job assignments and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Oversees, directs, and monitors staff and inmate/resident work activities by providing job instructions, and provides technical expertise on proper policies and procedures. Assures adequate security coverage in accordance with agency staffing requirements; evaluates situations, and determines an appropriate course of action. Investigates incidents to assure compliance with agency policy, councils residents and participates in disciplinary hearings for residents. Receives and reviews all inmate/residents disciplinaries to determine level. Observes and monitors resident/inmates' movement to ensure proper security. Counsels inmates/residents on personal problems and prison adjustment problems. Prepares and writes activity reports and other routine reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Knowledge of the characteristics of and response to human behavior. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies concerning the treatment of inmates/residents. Knowledge of correctional security requirements/practices. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of lower-level supervisors and/or subordinates. Ability to oversee security systems. Ability to interpret laws and regulations, and develop unit policies. Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus five years of experience in correctional security or law enforcement; including four years in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
