Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources

This individual is the sole staff member whose primary responsibilities include maintaining grounds and facilities at AMNR; the employee is not a member of an on-site maintenance team. Grounds responsibilities include mowing  non-wooded areas of 19.5 acres, including upkeep of gardens in parking lot medians. Individual will be responsible for conducting controlled burns and should be familiar with various hand and power tools, including chainsaw, weedeater, polesaw, etc.  This individual is the only member of the maintenance team. Individual must be self-motivated and directed, with good task management skills and the ability to work independently, as well as a member of the AMNR team as necessary. Individual will be responsible for facility maintenance for all site facilities, including replacing bulbs, some general repair, some electrical and plumbing work, some carpentry and general construction. Ability to drive a forklift is a plus. Individual must attend required training, including controlled burns, chainsaw certification, and the annual Maintenance training for State Parks. Must be able to handle working heights, including ladder and scissor-lift platform use and some work on building roofs. Individual will also be responsible for minor vehicle repairs.

Job Summary

The Maintenance Specialist provides essential support in managing the day-to-day maintenance operations within a facility or building complex. This role is focused on coordinating routine maintenance activities, processing work orders, and assisting in scheduling repairs and inspections. It is designed for individuals at the early stages of their maintenance management career who possess a foundational understanding of facility operations and are eager to learn and grow under the guidance of more senior team members.

Primary Responsibilities

Receive, log, and prioritize maintenance requests from internal teams or building occupants. Assist in scheduling and tracking routine inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance tasks. Coordinate with maintenance personnel and external vendors to ensure timely completion of work orders. Manage calendars and maintenance logs to keep operations running on schedule. Conduct initial troubleshooting of minor facility issues and escalate complex problems as needed. Provide on-site support for small-scale maintenance tasks under supervision. Maintain accurate records of maintenance requests, completed repairs, and scheduled activities. Update databases or computerized maintenance management systems with relevant information. Adhere to health and safety guidelines and ensure that all work is performed safely. Assist with periodic safety checks and contribute to maintaining a hazard-free work environment.

Knowledge and Skills

Familiarity with basic tools and equipment, such as hammers, drills, and hand tools. A willingness to learn about electrical, plumbing, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, and other systems relevant to facility maintenance. Ability to identify minor issues and determine practical solutions under the guidance of more experienced personnel. Effective verbal and written communication skills for reporting issues and collaborating with maintenance team members. Capacity to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and walking on various surfaces, which are common in maintenance duties.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in maintenance coordination or facilities management, demonstrating expertise in handling complex maintenance projects.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
