All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Department Personnel are prohibited from the use or possession of a medicinal marijuana card pursuant to this policy and state law.

Summary
The Arkansas Department of Correction/Department of Community Correction (ADC/DCC) Lieutenant is responsible for directing the work activities of a small to large staff of correctional employees and maintaining security within the institution. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Supervises protective service worker staff by interviewing, recommending hire/fire, and assigning and reviewing job assignments, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Oversees, directs, and monitors work activities by providing job instruction, issuing and retrieving tools, and providing technical expertise on proper policies and procedures. Supervises movement and daily activities, of inmates/residents including showering, meals, and work schedules, verifies inmate/resident count, and ensures that inmates/residents are transported to various locations, such as courts, medical appointments, and other institutions. Performs regular security checks of lock-down areas and barracks by checking locks and secured doors, performing inmate/resident and barracks searches, and performing strip searches, as needed. Maintains accurate inmate/resident count throughout shift, and assists in escapee hunts. Prepares and maintains reports concerning inmate/resident disturbances and injuries, including disciplinary actions, and may counsel inmates/residents with problems. Attends various meetings, including shift briefings to discuss incidents, problems, security issues, and inspections during shift. Reads, reviews, and applies information contained in inmate/resident records related to the inmates'/residents' health/safety and to the security of the facility and provides appropriate information to protective worker staff. May ride a horse to observe inmates for possible escape attempts. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus three years of experience in correctional security or law enforcement, including two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
