This position is located at the Jacob Wolf House site, 13775 Hwy 5 South, Norfork, AR 72658.

 

Job DutiesPlans, Researches, Develops, Coordinates, and Implements cultural and historic site interpretive programming for a wide range of audiences served.   Assists in the planning and implementation of historic site events.  Works with AV equipment, sound equipment, and other technical pieces in the effort to provide live, virtual or hybrid tours.  Plans, Develops, and Implements Community Outreach Programs for schools, colleges and universities, and public entities alike.   Manages the historic site’s visitor center to include a front-desk operation, exhibit area, and conduct light housekeeping duties. Provides interpretation to visitors about the historic site, regional area, and attractions/destinations in the State of Arkansas.   Provides operational support for the management of an early 19th century historic site including historic structures, grounds, and the protection and preservation of archeological resources.   Manages the historic site in the absence of the site manager.  Traditional Work schedule is: Tuesday-Saturday, 8am-4:30pm.  Performs Other Duties as Assigned:

 

Applicants must meet or exceed these qualifications:  The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in history, art history, education or a related area; plus one year of experience in museum or educational programs or a related field.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Posses or be able to obtain NAI Certified Guide Training, (National Association for Interpretation).

 

  • This position is limited to 1500 hours per year, valid Arkansas driver’s license, occasional in-state travel, a preemployment background is required and the position is subject to drug screening.

Summary

The Museum Interpretive Specialist is responsible for supervising staff and administering museum interpretive programming for museum special events, on-site programs, outreach programs, and other public services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Supervises a small staff by interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating performance. Develops museum public services including on-site and outreach programs, special events, lesson plans, tours, loan boxes, and teacher resource materials. Coordinates museum public programs, both on-site and outreach, including planning and implementation. Presents interpretive programs to visitors and educational groups. Conducts reseach of primary and secondary sources to develop adult, children, and living history programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of interpretive program development techinques. Knowledge of historical research techniques and procedures. Knowledge of national, state, and local history. Knowledge of administrative office management and supervision. Ability to prepare educational, promotional, and research materials and develop museum interpretive programs. Ability to write, edit, and present information orally and in writing. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to plan and coordinate events. Ability to organize and interpret historic data.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in history, art history, education, or related area; plus one year of experience in museum or educational programs, or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
