The mission of the Department of Corrections is to be a public safety resource for Arkansas families by providing professional management solutions and evidence-based rehabilitative initiatives for offenders.

All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Department Personnel are prohibited from the use or possession of a medicinal marijuana card pursuant to this policy and state law.

Summary

The Classification and Assignment Officer is responsible for determining initial inmate housing and job assignments, assisting in assigning inmate classifications, and coordinating activities for early release and/or work release of eligible inmates. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Determines initial inmate housing and job assignments by reviewing inmate files and interviewing inmates to ascertain criminal history, identification of known enemies at unit, and job skills. Recommends training for unskilled inmates. Prepares weekly classification meeting agendas after receiving classification action requests from inmate supervisors and attends weekly classification meetings. Reviews inmate work records to determine and recommend changes/advancements in inmate classifications and corresponding job assignments to classification committee. Maintains log books and files of inmate early release and work release applications, housing assignments, inmate transfers to other units, and daily inmate population counts. Screens inmate files to determine eligibility of inmate for early release or work release programs, transfers, and furloughs according to various state statutes and established policies, notifies inmate of eligibility, and assists inmates with completing applications for eligible programs. Presents early release and work release applications to classification committee for review and recommendation or determination. Notifies area law enforcement personnel of inmate request for early release, receives responses, informs inmate of decision, and coordinates release activities. Coordinates interview and transfer processes to various work release centers. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of correctional facilities. Knowledge of record keeping techniques and requirements. Knowledge of interview techniques. Ability to analyze and interpret information and recommend appropriate action. Ability to prepare and present oral and written information and reports. Ability to interview and assist inmates. Ability to maintain required documentation, records, and reports.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of advanced training in criminal justice, police law enforcement, correction technology, or a related field; plus two years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
