Job Summary
The Firing Range Specialist supports the daily operations and maintenance of a firing range facility. This role is designed for individuals beginning their careers in range operations and requires a commitment to safety, maintenance, and customer service. The specialist works under the supervision of a firing range officer or supervisor to ensure that the range remains safe, organized, and fully operational. Duties include basic firearm maintenance, cleaning, assisting with inspections, managing inventory of range equipment and supplies, and helping ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist in the disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and inspection of firearms and range equipment.
Support routine maintenance tasks and assist in troubleshooting minor equipment issues.
Help monitor activities on the firing line to ensure that all safety rules and operational procedures are followed.
Assist range officers during safety briefings, customer orientations, and during the conduct of firing sessions.
Maintain accurate records of range operations, including logs of equipment usage, maintenance activities, and supply inventory.
Help track and replenish ammunition, firearms cleaning chemicals, and other operational materials.
Welcome and assist range patrons by answering questions about range procedures and safety rules.
Perform light cleaning, janitorial, and maintenance duties such as tidying up the range area, cleaning targets, and ensuring the facility remains orderly.
Follow all safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use and disposal of hazardous materials.
Complete required safety training courses and certifications, such as an introductory firearms safety course within the designated period after hire.
Provide administrative and operational support as needed to ensure smooth daily operations.
Assist with setup and breakdown of range activities and special events when required.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong emphasis on adhering to safety protocols and a clear understanding of firearm handling practices.
Good verbal communication skills for interacting with range patrons and range personnel.
Ability to provide clear safety instructions and respond professionally to customer questions.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting (up to 50 pounds routinely, occasionally more) and standing for extended periods.
Comfort with using basic hand tools and routine machinery involved in range maintenance.
Basic understanding of mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Extensive on-the-job training should be expected, which will cover firearm maintenance procedures, range safety standards, and the facility’s operational protocols.
Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
