The mission of the Department of Military is to provide a professional staff of Arkansas State Employees who help maintain and improve the readiness of Arkansas National Guard units through effective fiscal management of State Resources, Human Resource Management, and quality administration of Arkansas National Guard Programs. Preferred Qualifications

Fire Academy Completion:  Successful completion of a recognized firefighter Training Academy program is mandatory. 

Certifications:  Must obtain required certifications such as Firefighter I/II, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, First Aid, and Emergency Medical certification.  

Ongoing Training:  Commitment to continuous education and periodic re-certification to stay current with the latest firefighting techniques and safety standards.

Physical and Aptitude Requirements:  Applicants must successfully pass rigorous physical agility tests and background checks, reflecting the demanding nature of the role.

Job Summary

The Firefighter II is a critical public safety professional tasked with protecting life, property, and the environment by responding to emergencies such as fires, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue operations. The Firefighter II must have the ability to work under extreme conditions and high stress while quickly assessing emergency situations and acting decisively to mitigate danger. This role requires physical stamina, technical proficiency with firefighting equipment, and strong teamwork to support coordinated emergency responses.

Primary Responsibilities

Rapidly respond to fire alarms, emergencies, and disaster situations including building fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous material spills, and rescue scenarios. Assess the scene upon arrival to determine the best course of action to protect life and property. Operate firefighting equipment—including hoses, ladders, and fire trucks—to extinguish fires safely and efficiently. Conduct search and rescue operations to extract individuals from dangerous environments, ensuring their safe evacuation. Provide basic emergency medical care as needed, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, either independently or as part of a team of first responders. Participate in routine fire inspections, identify potential fire hazards, and advise on prevention measures. Assist in educating the community on fire safety, prevention techniques, and emergency preparedness through public service announcements and training sessions. Regularly inspect, maintain, and test fire apparatus, equipment, and protective gear to ensure operational readiness. Participate in ongoing training programs, drills, and physical fitness routines to keep skills current and meet certification requirements. Complete detailed reports following emergency responses that document the events, actions taken, and any recommended follow-up measures.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
