Job Summary
The Radiological Program Specialist plays a pivotal role in overseeing and ensuring the safe use of radiation sources across the state of Arkansas. This position is essential to promoting public health and safety by monitoring, regulating, and enforcing radiological policies and procedures. The Radiological Program Specialist works closely with healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and industries that use radiation equipment. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth technical expertise, an ability to effectively communicate complex concepts, and the interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities
Monitor radiation safety programs within medical, industrial, and educational facilities across the state. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
Review and process applications for permits, licenses, and registrations for facilities using radiation-producing equipment. Evaluate radiological safety procedures to ensure that licensing requirements are met, and that health standards are adhered to.
Conduct routine inspections of radiation facilities and equipment, identifying potential hazards or violations. Develop inspection reports and provide corrective action recommendations. Follow-up on compliance enforcement actions as necessary.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on radiological licensing, inspections, and incidents. Prepare and submit comprehensive reports detailing findings, regulatory trends, and any recommended changes to enhance safety protocols.
Provide training and educational support to facilities, operators, and staff members to ensure best practices in radiation safety and regulatory adherence. Conduct workshops and seminars on radiation protection and safety standards.
Participate in response activities for radiological emergencies or incidents involving radiation sources, ensuring that all safety measures are followed and appropriate actions are taken to mitigate health risks to the public.
Assist in the development, implementation, and revision of radiological health policies and procedures in alignment with state and federal guidelines. Make recommendations for policy changes based on new information, technology, or incident analysis.
Collaborate with state and federal agencies, as well as other divisions within the Arkansas Department of Health, to support radiation safety initiatives and ensure consistent enforcement of radiological health standards.
Knowledge and Skills
In-depth knowledge of radiation safety standards, regulations, and equipment used in radiological applications. Familiarity with industry-specific regulations and compliance frameworks.
Ability to analyze technical data and regulatory documents, identifying potential safety hazards, compliance issues, or violations. Strong attention to detail when conducting inspections and audits.
Clear, concise, and effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports, present findings, and explain complex radiological concepts to non-experts.
Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities to assess situations quickly and implement appropriate solutions to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Ability to remain flexible and responsive to changes in regulations, technologies, and workplace demands, including adapting to evolving public health risks or emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in health physics, radiological health, engineering, environmental science, or a related field is required.
Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
