The Office of the Attorney General is seeking to hire an experienced paralegal to join the dynamic team in the Medicaid Fraud Division. The Medicaid Fraud Division is a unique team in that it can prosecute both criminal and civil cases, including Medicaid fraud and false claims, as well as abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable persons. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of an associate degree with training in paralegal studies. All applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience as a legal assistant, legal secretary, or paralegal to be considered for the position.

 

All candidates should have experience drafting correspondence and discovery, maintaining electronic calendars for attorneys, and preparing documents for trail. All candidates must be able to proficiently use all basic computer programs including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat Professional. Candidates should also have experience using the state and federal court’s filing systems.

 

All candidates must have verifiable experience successfully working with multiple attorneys in a fast paced and document intensive environment.  All candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the process of a lawsuit. The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing complaints and preparing responses to interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admissions.

Position Information

Summary

The Medicaid Fraud Division prosecutes both criminal and civil cases, including Medicaid fraud and false claims, as well as abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable persons.  This position will provide paralegal and secretarial support to lawyers in the Medicaid Fraud Division. 

Functions

1.    Draft legal documents including routine pleadings and motions, affidavits, and discovery. 
2.    Provide clerical support for attorneys including typing, copying, scanning, mailing, proofreading, filing, and preparing travel documents.
3.    Review case files and draft correspondence.
4.    Organize, monitor, and prepare discovery.
5.    Obtain documents and medical records for attorney use.
6.    Issue subpoenas and coordinate the availability of witnesses to ensure their appearance for testimony at trials, depositions, and meetings.
7.    Maintain paperless files and calendaring system for attorneys.
8.    Proofread pleadings and discovery responses for attorneys.
9.    Provide support services for attorneys during trials.
10.    All other duties as assigned.
 

Dimensions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have some experience with electronic filing, fax filing, and calendaring systems. Must be able to proficiently use all basic computer programs and software to consistently create polished and professional documents.
 
All candidates who are interviewed will be required to take a skills tests focusing on computer skills, proofreading, grammar usage, and legal problem-solving tasks for legal assistants and paralegals.
 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred.  A minimum of an associate degree in paralegal/ related studies or extensive experience in lieu of a degree is required.  Preference given to candidates with a degree and a paralegal certification.
