Preferred Qualifications:

 

Library experience working in cataloging, technical services, or with a government documents depository program, or an MLS with related coursework on the former.

 

Knowledge of MARC, Dublin Core and other metadata schemas, and the Arkansas Documents Classification.

 

Ability to stand and walk for long periods, to move book carts, and lift up to 20 pounds. Ability to stoop, bend and reach.

 

Software skills: Digital Asset Management software (Preservica); ILS (SirsiDynix); MS Office Suite; Digital Imaging/Scanning software, OCR and Image Editing software.

 

Examples of Work

 

  • Processes new document titles according to established guidelines, and collaborates with Cataloging staff to ensure proper classification of documents
  • Processes Serial and Annual publications
  • Receives and timestamps deposited Rules accurately based on filing date status
  • Verifies the correct number of document copies are deposited, and sends insufficient deposit notices according to established procedures
  • Maintains a shelf list for the collections to verify all titles are added according to established guidelines
  • Maintains files in online catalog as outlined in procedures manual
  • Maintain state agency rules certification file
  • Prepares the shipping lists and documents to be distributed to state depository libraries according to established guidelines
  • Processes the disposal lists from state depository libraries seeking to shrink or withdraw depository collections
  • Compiles statistical reports tracking the number of documents received and processed according to established guidelines on a daily, monthly, and annual frequency, and provides narrative reports on demand
  • Performs technical tasks associated with in-house digital imaging projects, such as document scanning, employing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, and following quality control measures according to established procedures
  • Assists Information Services staff and outside agencies with the location of Arkansas Documents or Rules as needed

Job Summary

The Librarian is responsible for providing basic library services and support to library patrons. This role involves assisting with the organization and maintenance of library materials, providing reference and information services, and supporting various library programs and activities. The librarian works under the supervision of more experienced and proficient library personnel and contributes to the overall operation and success of the library.

Primary Responsibilities

Assist with the organization and maintenance of library collections, including cataloging, shelving, and inventory management. Support library programs and activities, such as story times, book clubs, and educational workshops. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to library activities and circulation. Process new materials, including books, periodicals, and multimedia, for addition to the library collection. Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming library environment. Communicate regularly with internal library personnel and in an attempt to provide assistance. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge. Follow library policies and procedures to ensure the smooth operation of the library.

Knowledge and Skills

Attention to detail and accuracy in cataloging and record-keeping. Flexibility and adaptability to changing library needs and situations. Basic understanding of digital resources and information technology. Empathy and patience in working with library colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.

Prior experience in a library setting, such as internships, volunteer work, or part-time employment, is preferred but not required.

Knowledge of library principles, practices, and cataloging systems.

Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in using office software, such as Microsoft Office Suite, and library management systems.

Commitment to ongoing professional development and a willingness to learn.
