Job Duties: This is a part time position that carries out on-site land management activities (such as controlled burns, mowing, tail maintenance, special species management, exotic plant species control etc.) for lands in the state system of natural areas, according to the provisions of approved management plans.  Makes sure system areas are appropriately signed and signs are in good condition.  Maintains boundary markings, trails, and public access and visitor facilities.  Provides regular activity reports and other documentation of stewardship problems and activities as assigned.  Maintains stewardship equipment (vehicles, chainsaws, mowers, fire management equipment, etc.) in good working order.  Organizes and attends volunteer events on natural areas that enhance our land management program.  Develops strategies to recruit, train, and retain volunteers.  Maintains volunteer records, supervises, and evaluates the work of volunteers.  Reviews information from agency files for assigned system areas and performs additional research to become familiar with existing ecological and public use conditions on or adjacent to state –owned natural areas. Maintains contact with neighboring landowners and volunteers for stewardship-related projects and activities. Meets with other land managers responsible for co-managing assigned system areas and/or adjacent lands to develop positive working relationships, share information, and coordinate activities.  Assists the Stewardship Coordinator in reviewing management plans for areas in the system.  Notifies local and state government officials of stewardship plans and activities as appropriate (i.e. plans for prescribed burns).  Leads field trips and interacts with visitors and constituency groups, sharing information about specific natural areas in the system.  Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.


Applicants must meet or exceed these qualificationsThe formal education equivalent of bachelor’s degree in land resource management, biology, forestry or a related field; plus two years of experience in land management.


Preferred Qualifications: Because of the nature and importance of interactions with neighboring landowners and local officials and volunteers, the persons in these positions must be able to communicate clearly and to establish positive working relationships.  Additional desirable attributes include experience in developing and implementing biological monitoring programs and experience in working with volunteers.

The Land Management Specialist is responsible for on-site land management activities of natural areas. The position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.


Meets and confers with neighboring landowners, contractors, organizations, other government agencies, and the general public to share information and coordinate land management activities on natural areas. Develops, plans, and conducts on-site land management activities, including controlled burns, boundary demarcation, trail development and maintenance, special species management, and invasive species control on natural areas, according to the provisions of approved management plans. Purchases equipment and supplies for land management activities on natural areas, seeks, implements, and monitors contracts for land management activities, and is responsible for the maintenance of agency equipment, including vehicles, chainsaws, mowers, all-terrain vehicles, and fire management equipment. Writes or assists in the writing of management plans for lands in the system of natural areas, as required by legislation, statute, and policy, to address the changing conditions of the landscape and may write articles for publication in professional journals and give oral presentations. Recruits, trains, and evaluates the work of volunteers, acts as a team leader, and assists extra help employees with management plan activities on natural areas, providing training as needed. Maintains appropriate contact with federal, state, and local entities, and conservation professionals. Performs other duties as assigned.


Exposure to elements, walking long distances, and carrying equipment are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of biological, ecological, and environmental principles. Knowledge of land management principles and techniques. Knowledge of state fiscal procedures and policies. Ability to plan, motivate, direct, and evaluate the work of volunteers. Ability to read, interpret, analyze, and use topographic maps, land surveys, legal property descriptions, and aerial photographs. Ability to use a computer and related software. Ability to operate a variety of power tools and equipment, including chainsaws, all terrain vehicles, weed eaters, brush mowers, and pesticide sprayers. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, including detailed reports. Skill in basic carpentry. Skill in vehicle and small motor maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in land resource management, biology, forestry, or a related field; plus two years of experience in land management. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
