Salary Range: $32,405.00 - $51,686.00

Summary

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparing specimens and the laboratory for analysis, performing analysis, and recording results. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Obtains, logs, assigns laboratory control number, and labels specimen, verifying for accurate and complete specimen documentation. Develops, standardizes, evaluates, and modifies procedures, techniques, and tests used in the analysis of specimens and in medical laboratory experiments. Adjusts and calibrates laboratory instruments and prepares stains, dyes, agents, reagents, culture tubes, and slides for use in analysis. Performs laboratory tests and records results in supporting documentation and laboratory log book. Records refrigerator and incubator temperatures and performs quality control tests to ensure efficiency and accuracy of test results. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies, and the laboratory. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of laboratory test preparation and record keeping procedures. Knowledge of laboratory production procedures. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and / or subordinates. Ability to apply qualitative and quantitative techniques to complete a series of laboratory procedures. Ability to operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments. Ability to maintain precise records of technical processes and to prepare reports. Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus three years of work experience involving laboratory testing, set up, and operation of laboratory equipment, and laboratory record maintenance or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
