FORENSIC TECHNICIAN

 Forensic Toxicology Technician

  • Responsible for accessing and organizing evidence submitted for Toxicology (blood, urine, etc.) by Law Enforcement Agencies, Coroners, and Medical Examiners.  Must be able to lift 40-50 lbs.
  • Notates information regarding evidence submitted and generates barcodes for evidence chain of custody.
  • Organizes evidence in storage and helps with long-term evidence storage and disposal.
  • Present expert forensic testimony in court to testify to the accession and chain of custody in legal criminal proceedings. 
  • Verify the correct operation of scientific instruments and perform routine maintenance as needed. Prepare and verify reference materials and reagents according to established guidelines
  • Attend and participate in professional meetings and seminars to keep abreast of new technologies and methods in Toxicology.
  • Review current scientific literature.
  • Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The Forensic Toxicology Technician must possess at a minimum a high school diploma or higher.

Summary

The Forensic Technician is responsible for the daily activities of a forensic laboratory section. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Performs laboratory activities in one of the following sections: Evidence Receiving, Field Investigation, or Histology and Autopsy Services. Implements section specific policies and procedures. Maintains files, chain of evidence, and inventory control of tissues and bio specimens. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of section practices and techniques. Knowledge of proper evidence handling techniques. Knowledge of appropriate equipment/instruments. Ability to use appropriate equipment/instruments. Ability to maintain accurate case records. Ability to prepare technical reports.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a high school education, with science coursework and/or appropriate licenses, certificates or experience. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
