Summary
The Fire Protection Board Inspector/Investigator is responsible for inspecting the work of firms engaged in portable, fixed, and sprinkler fire protection systems and employees of those firms. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Performs random site inspections and documents findings utilizing document checklists and photographic records to report discrepancies and conclusions of inspections and complaint investigations to businesses and the board members.
Confers with complainants, respondents, and other interested parties to obtain facts relevant to the investigation; recommends corrective action to address inspection findings.
Prepares reports which provide information on number of investigations, number of discrepancies; and corrective actions taken to resolve violations discovered during site inspections; forwards reports to the board.
Attends board meetings, regulatory hearings, and public hearings and serves as a resource at these hearings to answer questions and update status on investigations.
Serves as a witness in administrative hearings or other legal proceedings when required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Dimensions
Occasional work other than normal business hours and extensive in-state travel are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing the fire protection industry.
Ability to review complaints and initiate action to begin investigations.
Ability to identify sources for relevant information to complete investigations.
Ability to communicate information to concerned parties, mediate issues or conflicts, and work to reach a fair resolution of the issues.
Ability to gather facts, analyze data, and prepare written or oral reports for agency use and/or administrative hearings.
Ability to interact with board members, agency personnel, the general public, fire departments and law enforcement agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal educational equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of experience in the fire protection industry or a related field.
Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
