Summary

The Engineer is responsible for overseeing and conducting engineering studies, developing design drawings and/or specifications, and performing related administrative duties. This position is governed by state and federal law and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Inspects sites to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and state and federal regulations during all phases of construction and/or inspects existing facilities for fire and safety code compliance and proper equipment operation. Completes reports of findings and takes necessary action to correct deficiencies. Inspects sites in response to complaints and to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and state and federal regulations for code compliance and completes reports of findings and takes necessary action to correct deficiencies. Designs, drafts, and/or reviews plans of proposed projects, and reviews engineering reports, plans, and specifications for compliance with all regulations and guidelines. Consults with public officials, consulting engineers, and architects, concerning design recommendations and/or design modifications for projects. Gathers data and researches technical information for monthly reports and for various studies. Prepares written inspection reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Dimensions

Must be able to work outdoors and on construction sites, if applicable to the educational specialty. May be exposed to hazards in the field or the laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering relating to the work performed. Knowledge of construction plans and designs. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing the field of engineering. Ability to inspect plans and/or structures to determine compliance with regulations. Ability to prepare and present technical information verbally and in writing. Ability to design and draft construction plans and write specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in chemical, electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering, or a related field.  Licensure may be required if not working under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.  Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
