Summary

The Education Paraprofessional is responsible for assisting teachers/instructors, and the educational process by training students in daily living skills, pre-vocational skills, and/or academic areas. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Maintains constant supervision of students during duty hours to provide a safe and healthy learning/home atmosphere at all times. Works under the supervision of a classroom teacher/Principal or other administrator, following directions and prescribed routines. Assures that all students are appropriately accounted for during all duty hours. Follows written and verbal directions and procedures in handling accidents and illnesses, ensuring students receive medical attention from the on-duty nurse and reporting incidents to supervisors. Uses effective behavior management techniques in all situations when working with students. Exercises initiative in assisting students by carrying out appropriate instructional, functional, daily living skills processes. Maintains positive attitudes and shows respect to students. May be assigned as a substitute teacher following prepared lesson plans. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of instructional techniques and practices. Knowledge of social development and life skills as they pertain to students. Knowledge of basic skills as related to supervision of students. Knowledge of basic and fundamental child growth and development. Ability to perform health needs related to students' bodily functions. Ability to demonstrate and model appropriate daily living skills. Ability to document student information. Ability to develop age-appropriate recreational activities for students.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent to a high school diploma, plus one year of additional training and/or experience in child care or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
