The Superintendent serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the Arkansas School for the Deaf (ASD) under the joint supervision of the Secretary of Education for the Arkansas Department of Education and the Board of Trustees. This position is responsible for planning and directing the development, delivery, and administration of the educational, residential life programs, and other services provided by the school. Uniquely, this Superintendent may need to work closely with the ASBVI Superintendent as well. Additionally, this position requires the continuing support of residential and community involvement programs that promote academic learning and the social emotional development of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children enrolled at ASD in the various programs such as Statewide Services, Early Childhood Education, K-12, and the Adult Deaf Career Center. The Superintendent directs and coordinates all business, facilities management, and community relations activities with a five-member Board of Trustees. The Superintendent is knowledgeable in current best practices in Deaf Education, which includes the effects of language deprivation and communication neglect. As a statewide service agency, the Superintendent collaborates with families, school districts, agencies, and communities throughout the state to meet the critical language, communication, and learning needs of children and students in Arkansas who are deaf and hard of hearing, birth through adulthood. The Superintendent must have proven performance as a collaborative leader, strong expressive and written communication skills, the ability to motivate and empower staff to perform at a high level and be a proven problem solver. The Superintendent must have strong networking skills, the ability to connect with State policy makers, and a high level of visibility on campus and within the community.
The Superintendent is sensitive to the views of the deaf community, is diplomatic and performs all functions of this position in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the mission and vision of ASD. Minimum Qualifications: Must hold a standard teaching license and have or obtain a Building Level or Curriculum/Program Administrator License. Must have four (4) years teaching experience with, preferably, Building Level or Curriculum/Program Administrator experience. Must obtain Superintendent certification. Must hold an Advanced Degree or have completed an Advanced Program of Study reflective of the Arkansas Standards for District Level Administrator. Successfully completed the School Superintendent Assessment (SSA). Sign Language: Fluent receptive and expressive American Sign Language and written English skills. Must have a Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) minimum rating of Intermediate Plus.
