Job Summary
The Database Specialist is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the maintenance and management of the state’s database systems. This role involves assisting with data entry, performing routine database updates, and supporting database administrators and analysts in the implementation and optimization of state databases. The Database Specialist will also be involved in troubleshooting minor database issues and ensuring data accuracy and integrity across systems.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist in the maintenance and updating of the state’s databases, including data entry, validation, and verification of data accuracy.
Support the creation of database structures and assist in ensuring data is properly stored, updated, and retrieved.
Monitor database performance and assist in resolving minor issues related to database queries and data access.
Assist with database backup and restore operations to ensure data recovery procedures are followed.
Assist in running routine database health checks and system optimizations.
Participate in the documentation of database procedures, policies, and standards.
Provide support for ad-hoc data analysis and reporting needs for state agencies.
Help troubleshoot database issues under the supervision of senior staff members.
Knowledge and Skills
Basic understanding of database principles, including relational database management and data integrity.
Proficiency in SQL and database query writing.
Familiarity with common database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL).
Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately input and verify data.
Basic problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
Willingness to learn and develop skills related to database administration and management.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.

Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
