Summary

The Chaplain is responsible for conducting and conducting general worship services and providing spiritual counseling to inmates in correctional institutions and clients of staff in institutional settings. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Conducts and supervises worship services by providing sermons and religious instructions. Counsels inmates and staff concerning faith issues, grief, personal crises, family issues, and rehabilitation work. Coordinates and supervises religious programs, pastoral visits, religious services workshops, and volunteer programs. Leads ecumenical worship services for individuals and administers religious rites and ordinances. Assists in interviewing and selecting the volunteer religious representatives. Orients volunteers to relevant policies and procedures. Performs visits to hospitals to check on inmate or client needs. Delivers death and hospitalization notices to inmates from immediate family members. Consoles in crisis situation and processes emergency furlough paperwork. Prepares reports concerning service attendance and donated materials. Orients new inmates to available religious services and assistance programs. May write articles for publication and reports of worship service attendance, donated materials, and hospital visits. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of volunteer and community programs. Knowledge of the principles and practices of theological counseling. Ability to prepare and present oral and written information and materials. Ability to plan, develop, and conduct worship services. Ability to interview, offer spiritual support, counsel, and serve as an advocate for clients. Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs, services, and policies and recommend changes when needed. Ability to interact with inmates, clients, families and outside entities.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in counseling, theology, or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
