  • Elementary Special Education Teacher (K-6)
    • Successful applicants must currently possess licensure as a special education instructional specialist in the grades served (licensure code 230, 231, 246, or equivalent) or qualify for an alternate pathway to obtain the necessary licensure credential. Experience serving blind and/or visually impaired students with developmental delays is preferred. Proficiency in reading and transcribing Braille at an instructional level is required. Applicants who do not currently possess proficiency in reading and transcribing Braille at an instructional level will be expected to obtain that credential through a training program in a specified timeframe provided by the school. Candidates must commit to receive additional professional development training provided by the school or licensure credential in delivering appropriate services to blind and visually impaired students.
  • Elementary Teacher (K-6)
    • Successful applicants must currently possess licensure as an elementary teacher in the grades served (licensure code 183, 184, 253, or equivalent) or qualify for an alternate pathway to obtain the necessary licensure credential. Experience serving blind and/or visually impaired students is preferred. Proficiency in reading and transcribing Braille at an instructional level is required. Applicants who do not currently possess proficiency in reading and transcribing Braille at an instructional level will be expected to obtain that credential through a training program in a specified timeframe provided by the school. Summary

The Certified Bachelors Teacher is responsible for teaching academic subjects to deaf, blind, and vision or hearing-impaired students. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Evaluates sensory-impaired students' strengths and weaknesses, based on medical, psychosocial, and academic achievement tests, teacher assessments, and observation of students. Writes Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) that establish individual achievement goals for each student. Develops lesson plans for reaching IEP goals and complying with curriculum guidelines. Creates or modifies teaching materials and learning aids for sensory impaired students. May utilize specialized instructional methods, including sign language or Braille, to teach classes. Evaluates student progress, through written work, observation, testing, and oral feedback, and completes reports on student achievement. Meets with students, parents, and/or other staff to discuss student goals, progress, and/or problems. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the subject matter being taught. Knowledge of educational planning and teaching techniques. Ability to develop individualized achievement goals based upon psycho-educational testing and evaluation results. Ability to evaluate students' progress and revise Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) and lesson plans. Ability to interact with others to discuss and resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications

Certified in a teaching area, such as elementary education or subject being taught by the Arkansas Department of Education in accordance with ACA 6-17-401, 6-17-402, and 6-17-403. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
