The Office of Attorney General Tim Griffin is seeking to hire an attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division. Come and be a part of a dynamic team that passionately works to see that justice is served in the final criminal review process. This position offers research, writing, litigation, and oral advocacy opportunities.

Responsibilities include: preparation of responses to habeas corpus petitions in the United States District Courts and state courts; writing appellate briefs for the Arkansas appellate courts, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals; conducting evidentiary hearings in the federal district courts and state courts; and presenting oral arguments to the Arkansas appellate courts and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. The position involves death penalty litigation. Litigation experience and criminal law experience are preferred. Salary will depend upon qualifications and experience.

Summary

Incumbent serves as an Assistant Attorney General within a division.

Functions

1.    Position employees prepare responses to habeas corpus petitions in the United States District Courts and state circuit courts.
2.    Position employees write appellate briefs and responses in the Arkansas appellate courts, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
3.    Position employees conduct legal research of laws, legal opinions, policies, regulations, legal texts, and precedent cases bearing on the legal issues involved in the problem, proposal, or case.  Employees are expected to analyze the factual and legal issues involved, explain the application of legal principles and precedents, and justify legal arguments and conclusions.
4.    Position employees conduct evidentiary hearings in the federal district courts and state circuit courts.  Conducting pre-hearing discovery, witness preparation, and witness examination is required.
5.    Employees present oral argument to the Arkansas appellate courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
6.    All other duties as assigned.
7.    The position involves death penalty litigation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position requires excellent research, writing, oral-advocacy and litigation skills, attention to detail, and time-management skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a Juris Doctorate from an accredited school of law.  Prefer at least 3-5 years litigation and/or criminal law experience.

Licenses

Licensed to practice law in the State of Arkansas.
