Summary

The ADH Radioactive Materials Program Specialist is responsible for the review and renewal of radioactive material licenses, performing compliance inspections, and environmental monitoring activities. This position will also report findings associated with radiation protection inspections of facilities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Performs routine and complex inspections of materials licensees to ascertain if findings indicate a significant violation of the license or rules. Determines eligibility of applicant, qualifications of users of radioactive materials, storage, and safety procedures. Examines license renewal applications for completeness and accuracy and amends license applications by writing in specific conditions. Performs routine and complex inspections of operating and/or decommissioning facilities; Prepare inspection reports to document whether the facility is being operated safely, the licensee's management control program is effective, and regulatory requirements are being met. Examines license renewals applications for completeness and accuracy. Determines eligibility of applicant, qualifications of users of radioactive materials, storage and safety procedures. Responds and investigates incidents reported to program to ensure public safety. Participate in required drills and exercises as required by the program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of state and federal laws governing nuclear health and safety hazards. Knowledge of radiological testing equipment and testing procedures utilized at nuclear energy facilities. Ability to conduct on-site inspections of facilities to determine radiation hazards, document findings, and make recommendations for correcting problems. Ability to provide technical information on methods of dealing with radiation hazards and  procedures to be followed in radiation incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in science or related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB-RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
