Job Summary

The Environmental Health Inspector Supervisor/Expert is the highest-level position within the Environmental Health Inspector job series. This role is responsible for overseeing, managing, and directing environmental health inspection programs and services at the state level. The Supervisor/Expert ensures that state and local environmental health policies and regulations are effectively enforced and provides guidance and leadership to a team of inspectors. This role requires expert-level knowledge of environmental health standards, laws, and public health practices to protect the community’s well-being.

Primary Responsibilities

The assignment of supervisory duties is determined by the hiring agency's operational needs. Non-supervisory roles will serve as senior technical experts. Supervise and manage a team of Environmental Health Inspectors and support staff, ensuring effective enforcement of environmental health regulations and laws. Develop, implement, and oversee statewide environmental health inspection programs related to food safety, sanitation, water quality, waste disposal, and public health hazards. Review and approve inspection reports, ensuring that all regulatory violations are accurately documented, and corrective actions are taken. Provide expert consultation and technical support on complex environmental health issues, including emergency preparedness and response, disease prevention, and environmental health hazards. Collaborate with local and state public health agencies, stakeholders, and the public to ensure community health and safety. Develop and deliver training and educational programs for environmental health staff and local partners. Conduct advanced inspections in high-risk areas, evaluate compliance, and ensure the resolution of complex violations. Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and policy updates to governmental bodies and stakeholders.

Knowledge and Skills

Expert-level knowledge of environmental health laws, regulations, and best practices related to sanitation, food safety, water quality, air pollution, vector control, and waste management. Leadership and team management skills, project management, and program development. Expertise in environmental health inspection techniques, data analysis, and reporting. Ability to make decisions and enforce regulations fairly and consistently. Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively convey complex health and safety information to diverse audiences. Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or equivalent certification. In-depth knowledge of state and federal environmental health laws and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. At least 5 years of experience in environmental health inspection or a related field, including at least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or expert-level role.

Licensure/Certifications
