Reviewing all documentation required for citizen to take a DL test, scanning documents and creating accounts for new students, administer and monitor DL tests electronically, issue permits, administer DL skills tests which requires the examiner to ride in the student’s vehicle during the examination.

Job Summary

The Driver’s License Examiner is responsible for administering driver’s license examinations, including knowledge, vision, and road tests, to ensure applicants meet Arkansas state standards for safe driving. This role involves evaluating driver competency, verifying applicant eligibility, and enforcing motor vehicle laws.

Primary Responsibilities

Administer knowledge (written), vision, and road skills tests for all classes of driver’s licenses, including Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). Evaluate applicant driving skills through road tests, ensuring compliance with state and federal safety regulations. Inspect applicant vehicles before road tests to verify compliance with Arkansas vehicle safety standards. Explain test procedures, pass/fail criteria, and retesting requirements in a clear and professional manner. Record test results accurately and ensure proper documentation for licensing approval or denial. Provide excellent customer service by assisting applicants with testing procedures and answering questions regarding licensing requirements. Ensure all applicants understand Arkansas traffic laws, road signs, and defensive driving principles. Handle challenging or frustrated applicants professionally, maintaining a calm and impartial demeanor. Promote public safety awareness by educating applicants on safe driving habits and traffic regulations. Verify applicant identity and eligibility by reviewing required documentation, including birth certificates, residency proofs, and prior licenses. Maintain accurate and secure records of all test results, ensuring compliance with Arkansas state policies. Identify and report suspected fraud or violations of testing protocols to appropriate authorities. Ensure all examinations adhere to state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Maintain testing equipment, ensuring written exams, vision screening tools, and road test materials are available and operational. Assist in scheduling and coordinating test sessions, ensuring efficient use of state resources. Participate in training programs to stay updated on changes in licensing laws and testing procedures.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of Arkansas motor vehicle laws, traffic regulations, and commercial driving standards. Familiarity with testing procedures for various classes of driver’s licenses, including CDL requirements. Ability to accurately assess driving skills and provide constructive feedback. Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain test procedures, licensing requirements, and test results. Ability to work with diverse populations while maintaining professionalism and impartiality. Effective conflict resolution skills to handle complaints or disputes related to test results. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of test results and applicant eligibility. Strong organizational skills to ensure timely and efficient testing operations. Ability to recognize fraudulent documents and report any irregularities. Ability to assess applicant performance and make fair, fact-based pass/fail determinations. Strong judgment skills to ensure public safety by denying licenses to unqualified applicants. Quick decision-making abilities to handle unexpected issues during road tests.

Minimum Qualifications

At least six months of experience in motor vehicle licensing, customer service, or a related field.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
