Summary

The Skilled Trades Foreman is responsible for coordinating and scheduling work projects in one or more of the skilled trades shops. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Provides general supervision of journeyman supervisors by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, and evaluating work performance, to ensure adherence to established trades shop practices. Coordinates and schedules work assignments for one or more large skilled trades craft shops. Coordinates respective skilled craft shop activities with other craft shops working on renovation and construction projects. Receives work order requests and determines priority of resources to complete projects. Inspects equipment, structures, or materials to indentify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. Examines objects, systems, or facilities and analyzes information to determine needed installations, services, or repairs. Provides estimates of costs and itemizes supplies, equipment, and man-hours needed for projects. Checks status of work in progress and makes inspections of completed work for compliance with applicable specifications and codes. Orders materials and supplies needed from warehouse or through purchase contracts. Participates in budget preparation and administration, coordinating purchasing and documentation, and monitoring shop expenditures. Meets with campus departmental officials to discuss requested work orders and/or projects. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and safety precautions in one or more of the skilled trades. Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and codes relating to one or more of the skilled trades. Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and techniques. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and/or work drawings. Ability to supervise skilled trades workers and/or supervisors. Ability to plan and coordinate all phases of work projects in one or more of the skilled trades. Skill in the use and care of tools and machinery used in one or more of the skilled trades.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus completion of required education or training along with the required license or certification in one or more of the applicable skilled trades listed below; plus two years of experience in the skilled trade area listed below, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus seven years of experience as a carpenter or painter, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.  Must be licensed as a Journeyman Electrician in accordance with ACA 17-28-304, Journeyman Plumber in accordance with ACA 17-38-301, or HVACR Mechanics in accordance with ACA 17-33-301.  Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
