Summary
The Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) Agriculture Production Supervisor is responsible for directing the livestock and poultry operation for the Department of Correction. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Supervises a medium-sized staff of agricultural workers by interviewing applicants and recommending for hire, training, making work assignments, approving leave, and evaluating the work performance of incumbents. Prepares and monitors annual budget for maintaining livestock and poultry, writes bid specifications for purchasing and selling livestock and poultry, and purchases livestock and poultry for the department. Controls spread of diseases of livestock and poultry by scheduling and coordinating required blood tests and vaccinations and inspecting food additives for defects. Directs construction and maintenance of buildings and fences for livestock and poultry management and selects the seed and fertilizer to improve pastures. Directs the feeding, breeding, and general management of livestock and poultry and determines when to purchase, sell, or slaughter stock. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of agriculture production. Knowledge of the types and uses of farm equipment. Knowledge of chemicals used in agriculture production. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of lower-level supervisors and/or subordinates. Ability to write specifications for equipment and supplies. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate livestock and poultry production operations.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus seven years of experience and/or training in agriculture, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
