Summary
The Military Firefighter is responsible for performing fire fighting and prevention and crash/rescue activities in an air field environment. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Drives and operates fire fighting and crash/rescue equipment, performs rescue duties, and administers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Conducts inspections of fire/rescue equipment and vehicles, performs minor preventive maintenance and repairs, and documents by checking preventive maintenance and inspection log. Serves as alarm room operator, by dispatching equipment, monitoring and operating the alarm systems, two-way radio, and telephones, relaying information through the use of the two-way radio, telephone, and public address systems, and maintaining log of fire station calls and activities. Performs daily cleaning of vehicles, equipment, and fire station area. Trains and participates in fire prevention, fire fighting, and crash/rescue techniques to maintain required fire fighting and crash/rescue proficiency. Assists with performing inspections of buildings for violation of fire prevention regulations and assists with repairing and servicing fire extinguishers. Performs other duties as assigned.
Dimensions
Shift work, exposure to danger, and the wearing of protective clothing are required. Must maintain a secret national security clearance or greater.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of fire detection and suppression systems. Knowledge of fire fighting/rescue techniques and equipment. Knowledge of airfield and aircraft communications and alarms. Ability to read, write, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to physically operate fire fighting/rescue equipment and perform fire fighting/rescue activities.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Must be able to secure a Department of Defense secret clearance as established by Air Force Regulation 205-32, Department of Defense fire/rescue training course as established by the National Fire Protection Standards 1003, 1500, and associated standards. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
