The Accountant I is responsible for performing professional accounting and financial duties for Arkansas TV, formerly Arkansas PBS. This position maintains financial records, processes accounting transactions, reconciles accounts, and prepares financial reports in compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and policies. The Accountant I plays a key role in collaborating with financial staff and other divisions to ensure accurate and timely financial operations. This role involves preparing and analyzing financial statements, reports, and budgets using accounting software and Microsoft Office. Key skills include strong analytical abilities, organizational, problem-solving, attention to detail, effective communication, application of accounting procedures, and spreadsheet preparation in Microsoft Excel.

 

Typical Functions

  • Establishes and maintains accounting records for the general ledger, grants, contracts, receivables, expenditures, assets, and inventory.
  • Processes journal entries and reconciles accounts and trial balances by identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Establishes grant and contract accounts upon award completion and manages billings, invoices, drawdowns, budget modifications, expense transfers, and receivable transactions.
  • Prepares financial reports, spreadsheets, and database files to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Analyzes financial data, trends, revenues, expenditures, and obligations to project future budget needs.
  • Monitors purchasing and travel procedures and determines appropriate account coding and payment responsibility in accordance with the Finance Management Guide and State Travel policy.
  • Assists management in developing and improving accounting systems, procedures, and automated financial processes.
  • Provides technical assistance to management, staff, and external stakeholders regarding accounting, budget, grant, and financial policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 1-2 years of experience processing accounting transactions using an automated accounting software system

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, budgeting, and financial reporting practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal financial laws, regulations, and accounting standards.
  • Experience with AASIS (the state accounting software system), entering transactions and running reports.
  • Experience preparing spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel.

Job Summary

The Accountant I is responsible for performing professional accounting and financial tasks within a department. This position involves processing financial transactions, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with state financial regulations and policies. The Accountant I will work closely with other financial staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in the agency’s financial operations.

Primary Responsibilities

Prepare and maintain financial records, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all transactions. Assist in the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts in accordance with state regulations and policies. Reconcile accounts, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved in a timely manner. Prepare journal entries and ensure all entries are properly documented and in compliance with state accounting standards. Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.

Knowledge and Skills

Familiarity with governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting processes. Proficient in accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel) and standard office applications. Skilled in preparing and presenting financial statements, budgets, and reports. Understanding of state and federal financial regulations and accounting standards.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
