Position Information

Job Summary

The District Forester is responsible for overseeing and implementing forestry programs within an assigned district in Arkansas. This position involves forest management, wildfire prevention and suppression, emergency response planning, budget management, and personnel supervision. The District Forester ensures compliance with state and federal forestry laws, collaborates with stakeholders, and provides leadership in sustainable forestry initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

Develop and execute district-level forestry management plans aligned with state and federal policies. Oversee timber management, reforestation, prescribed burning, and forest conservation initiatives. Monitor forest health, pest management, and wildfire risk reduction programs. Ensure sustainable land-use practices and compliance with forestry regulations. Lead wildfire prevention, detection, and suppression efforts within the district. Coordinate with fire crews, emergency responders, and other agencies during wildfire incidents. Implement and supervise prescribed burns and hazardous fuel reduction projects. Train and equip personnel to handle fire suppression operations and emergency response protocols. Supervise a team of foresters, forestry technicians, and seasonal workers. Address public concerns, inquiries, and requests for forestry-related services. Manage district forestry budgets, funding allocations, and grant compliance. Prepare and submit progress reports, environmental assessments, and operational summaries. Utilize GIS mapping, remote sensing, and data analysis tools for forestry planning and reporting. Ensure compliance with state forestry laws, fire codes, and federal conservation programs. Frequent in-state travel and seasonal subject-to-call status is required. Prepare annual fire plan and set district fire danger levels. Establishes and maintains records and reports of district operations. Maintain regular contact with federal, state, county and local officials, non-government organizations, volunteer fire departments and other community partners.

Knowledge and Skills

Expertise in forest ecology, silviculture, timber management, and wildfire suppression. Proficiency in GIS mapping, GPS technology, and remote sensing applications. Strong understanding of Arkansas forestry laws, conservation programs, and best management practices. Knowledge of fire behavior, emergency response coordination, and prescribed burn techniques. Ability to supervise, mentor, and motivate forestry personnel. Strong ability to engage with landowners, agencies, and the public. Ability to assess situations and implement effective forestry solutions. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and ensure compliance. Ability to plan work unit objectives and operations and to assign and direct the work of subordinates. Strong knowledge of Incident Command principles and serves as Incident Commander on complex incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

At least three years of experience forestry experience, including one year in a leadership capacity. Must pass annual physical standard and reside within the assigned area as a condition of employment.

Licensure/Certifications

Must be licensed as a Registered Forester in the State of Arkansas. NWCG Firefighter Type 2 Certification. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
