Special Work Conditions: The DHS Area Manager (Area Director) is the leader for the designated service area for DCFS. This Area Director is responsible for managing all DCFS Staff and supporting growth in supervisors within the counties and area. Leadership on the Area Director level facilitates the transformation through a strong vision and family centered values. The leader must be able to inspire and lead staff, work effectively with community partners and people who have lived experience in child welfare and carry out the change management process in a highly inclusive manner.
Preferred Qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a master’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology, or a related field, plus five years’ experience in human services or a related field, including four years in a managerial or supervisory capacity. OR the formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree plus 7 years’ experience in a human services or related field.

Summary
Functions
Manages daily operations of the county offices within the specified area to ensure quality services are provided to families and children. Monitors service delivery and compliance with state and federal laws and agency policy. Directs the activities of a staff comprised of child welfare professionals, paraprofessionals and administrative staff. Assigns work and monitors case ratios and quality. Assists in developing and evaluating program activities. Disseminates information to staff and provides in-service training. Reviews, verifies and approves area expenditures, and monitors area budget. Recommends budget changes and advises executive management of potential budget problems. Assesses staffing needs and participates in interviewing and hiring employees. Ensures that all area employees are evaluated annually with necessary interim reviews and improvement plans. Receives, investigates and responds to complaints and inquiries. Coordinates attorneys, general public, elected officials, and state and local law enforcement to solve problems. Exercises leadership and motivates staff by utilizing strategic planning and quality management techniques. Establishes performance standards and develops opportunities to maximize employees' capabilities. Performs other duties as assigned.
