Summary

The Rehabilitation Instructor Supervisor is responsible for supervising vocational training programs and activities for handicapped students. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Supervises a large professional and administrative support staff by interviewing and hiring, providing technical guidance, establishing and monitoring work standards, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Reviews statistics, placement information, and employment trends, obtains input from community business leaders to evaluate existing programs, and assesses the need for new programs. Develops training program outlines, objectives, and operating budget and monitors expenditures to ensure they are within budgetary limits. Maintains contact with other specialists, officials, and disability groups to stay abreast of grant availability and new developments in teaching techniques, equipment, tools, or furniture. Reviews requests for students' certificates of completion to determine whether they have satisfactorily met training program requirements. Approves/disapproves equipment, supplies, and student issue requisitions and sets up and maintains inventory records. Substitutes for absent instructors. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the subject(s) and/or skill(s) being taught. Knowledge of rehabilitation teaching techniques. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of learning aids and teaching materials appropriate to the subject area and students' handicaps. Ability to develop and implement training programs appropriate to the individual's functioning level and treatment goals. Ability to administer and interpret assessment tests and prepare reports. Ability to implement behavior modification programs. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to develop operating budget and monitor expenses. Ability to interact with others to inform, discuss, and resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology, or a related area; plus two years of experience in the area being taught, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. OR The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of advanced training in the area being taught and four years of experience in the area being taught, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
